is rollback obama initiatives to cut spending. a lot of them thought the debt ceiling should not be increased under any circumstances and to that degree feel like i was. they basically believe their job is to obstruct barack obama and once there is a republican president in place from the two pass this initiative secreted better business climate, more and more deregulation committee funding of programs that have never quite been near and dear to them. of course to flash forward a day, i suspect we'll talk about the debt ceiling fiasco of 2011. after that summer undertaken to the brink of a fiscal cliff, the thinking on the house republican leader ship is maybe a tea party freshmen will go homehome, get yelled at by constituents and realize maybe compromise is not such a bad thing. they went home and the people who put at town halls tend to be that this is their party and those people tend to be tea party and they said why did video? you said you would not under any circumstances raise the debt ceiling. at best there's mixed messages and a great likelihood it will be a while before we see mode

like a pro. >> well, we've already talked a lot the about it this morning. president obama can't raise enough money through his tax plans to cover all the spending. that means he could resume other ways for the revenue to come in. will a carbon tax be among them? joining us now from the american action forum, sam, we know the president wants this thing. he tried desperately, even with democrats holding both houses of congress, however, he couldn't get it. will he try to pursue it in his first year of the second term? >> well, there's certainly a lot of revenue out there. a lot of projections are, if carbon is at $20 per ton of carbon, it could generate roughly a trillion dollars over the next ten years, of course, that figure of $20 would increase, but i think it's pretty tough for republicans to swallow another trillion dollars in revenue from a carbon tax, so i don't think it's very likely to get 60 votes in the senate or for speaker boehner from ohio which is a big coal producing area, which would be hit the hardest by a carbon tax, i don't think it's likely he would bring that up f

of the sequester, which is the automatic spending cuts that are set to hit enter january. the obama administration has some ability to blunt the effect of the cuts. there are a lot of people of in the republican party who are very upset with the cuts that would hit the pentagon. it may be difficult to rally republican votes of the cannot turn off the sequester. on the democratic side, the estate tax could be a problem. the republicans are insistent that the estate tax stay at current levels, which is exempting the state of $55 million at a relatively late 35% above that level. many democrats would like to see -- in january it is expected to come -- taxes are expected to go up dramatically. as small as $1 million would be taxed. most democrats want to see something in the metal. they are adamant that we cannot exempt states as large as $5 million. that could be another sticking point. >> do we expect anything going on today? if not, what is the earliest of the senators will come back in for session tomorrow? caller: i think the senate is due back in at 1:00. the house is due at 6:30. the house is t

about addressing this problem. president obama and the democrats are saying we have a combined problem both in terms of not sufficient taxation and also we have to have cuts in spending. we have to do the cuts in spending over time because you do not want to endanger a very fragile economy. to respond directly to your question, why do i think the electorate looking at the present obama and cutting the debt in half, i think the answer is we went through a very difficult economic recession. some spending was in order. 50% of the debt or more in terms of spending on wars, prescription drug benefits and things not properly funded, and when you ask the american people about those things, they still blame president bush ii for the economic recession and for the debt more so than president obama. host: as far as the fiscal cliff, who will most likely make the next news story? guest: i think it has to be president obama. i think john boehner went through a devastating experience this last week when he called for a vote and did not have a vote. his troops abandoned him. it has been ongoing for
